It is hard to tell if you need stitches without actually seeing the cut but there are several things that suggest that you need further evaluation. If you have bleeding that is difficult to control, cuts that are gaping, or lacerations that limit the mobility of a joint need further attention. Also, if you have the possibility of a foreign body left in the wound you should seek medical attention. It is better to err on the side of having the wound evaluated if you have concerns. To control bleeding, a clean pressure dressing is recommended. If a wound needs suturing, do not wait until the next day, there are limitations on the time that you can close a wound.
